Crossing guide

The London to New York crossing guide

Choose an aircraft class, a direction and a season to see whether the crossing is usually nonstop, how long it takes and roughly what the flying costs. Then read on for fuel stops, airports and customs.

Fuel stops

Where a planned stop happens

When an aircraft cannot cross nonstop with proper reserves, the operator plans a technical stop on the way. Each stop usually adds about an hour, most of it on the ground while the aircraft is refuelled.

SNN · Ireland

Shannon

The westernmost major airport in Ireland and a natural last stop in Europe. Shannon is also known for US border preclearance, which some flights use to complete US entry before the crossing; availability varies, so the operator confirms.

KEF · Iceland

Keflavik

Splits the ocean into two shorter legs, which is why midsize jets and smaller often route this way. Winter weather is part of the planning.

YQX · Newfoundland

Gander

A historic transatlantic stop on the Canadian side, with long runways and a long record of serving oceanic flights.

YYR · Labrador

Goose Bay

Paired with Keflavik on the northern route used by shorter-range aircraft, about 1,300 nautical miles apart.

Departure

Leaving London

Farnborough (FAB), south-west of London, is built for business aviation and handles a large share of transatlantic private departures.

Luton (LTN), to the north, combines airline traffic with large private terminals and suits travellers from north London and beyond.

Biggin Hill (BQH), in the south-east, is a business aviation airport within easy reach of the City and Canary Wharf.

All three see long-range jets every day. The right choice is usually the one closest to where you start, unless the aircraft for your trip is based at another.

Arrival

Landing in New York

Teterboro (TEB) is about 12 miles from Midtown, has no airline service and is the usual choice for Manhattan.

White Plains (HPN), in Westchester County, suits the northern suburbs and Connecticut.

JFK has private terminals and suits passengers connecting onward on airline flights.

The operator sends passenger details to US Customs and Border Protection before departure and arranges clearance at your arrival airport. Each traveller needs a valid passport and the right US entry authorisation for their nationality; see cbp.gov. For the return, check UK entry requirements on gov.uk.
